It’s Sam Darnold’s turn at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. The team announced Tuesday that Darnold will make his season debut on Sunday against the Denver Broncos after interim head coach Steve Wilks decided to bench Baker Mayfield following another rocky performance in a 13-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Darnold is the fourth different quarterback to play for the Panthers this season — and the third different starter joining Mayfield and the injured P.J. Walker. Darnold went 4-7 as Carolina’s starter last season. Mayfield has struggled since being acquired in a trade in July from the Cleveland Browns, going 1-5 as Carolina’s starter.

The PGA Tour referred to Rory McIlroy and Lydia Ko as golf royalty because they ruled the golf world this year. They had great years, no doubt. But neither won a major. And when it comes the PGA Tour, such a label dismisses Scottie Scheffler and ignores Cameron Smith. Both won more than McIlroy. Each won a major. What men's golf had this year was three great years by three players. What makes McIlroy stand out is winning the points title on two tours. And mostly it's for his strong voice of support for the PGA Tour in its fight with LIV Golf.

Harry Higgs is part of a three-way tie for the lead in the RSM Classic at Sea Island. That's a big deal because Higgs lost his full PGA Tour card last season and now only has conditional status. Putnam had a 65 on the Plantation course. The final two round are held at Seaside. Among those one shot behind was Joel Dahmen.

Champagne, whiskey, vodka and even some sommelier-selected wines will be available for some fans at World Cup stadiums in Qatar. And beer also. But the privilege of drinking alcohol will come at a price for this exclusive group of high rollers. Fans will be able to enjoy alcoholic drinks and fine food in the luxurious hospitality lounges at the eight stadiums for $3,000 per ticket. Wine, beer and “street food on the move” can be had in a tented village next to the stadium for $950 per person. That is going to be a far different experience from regular fans because Qatar has decided to ban beer sales at the stadiums.

Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees has won the American League MVP award, and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt took the NL prize. After hitting 62 home runs this season to break the AL record, Judge easily beat out Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani in an MVP race some thought might be close. The 6-foot-7 outfielder received 28 of 30 first-place votes and two seconds for 410 points from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. Ohtani, last year's winner, was picked first on two ballots and second on the other 28 for 280 points. Goldschmidt took the NL trophy for the first time after a couple of close calls earlier in his career, beating out Padres third baseman Manny Machado.
