To the editor:

I keep reading letters from people who paint Joe Biden as a socialist.

The trouble is this: America has had partial socialism ever since the first voters elected the first county commissioners, who levied the first taxes to pay for the first street lamps and constables. It is only a matter of degree. What government services do you want, and which ones are you willing to pay taxes for?

Do we get rid of all our socialist programs? That would include public schools, paved roads, traffic signals, police, fire, and ambulance protection, all U.S. military branches, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the monitoring of our food, water, air, and soil, and assistance for the poor, the elderly, and the infirm.

We could conceivably vote to abandon all government services and brag that we are not like Venezuela. Or we could embrace getting what we pay for, and compare ourselves to some very successful Scandinavian countries ... places where people do not have to fear that getting sick might cause bankruptcy and homelessness.
