Police honor fallen officers

Above: High Point police honored five officers during a special memorial service Tuesday night at the One Church on Westchester Drive. The service was in conjunction with National Police Week, an annual time to remember police officers who died in the line of duty and for the public to show support for local police departments. Shown is High Point Police Chaplain Paul Coates as he rings a memorial bell to signify each officer’s end of watch as the names of the five local officers are read. They are Officer James Witcher (died Sept. 15, 1913), Officer Carey Reaves (died June 10, 1925), Officer Fred Claywell (died June 18, 1925), Capt. Jerome Morris (died Sept. 16, 1928) and Officer Shelia Twyman (died Dec. 23, 2001). Left: Seven-year-old Kali Clayton pays tribute to police officers with a sign that reads, “They all make it possible,” during the family presentation portion of Tuesday’s memorial service.
