HIGH POINT — High Point University wants the city to rename E. Hartley Drive to N. University Parkway.

The Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday, by a vote of 7-0, found that the request has merit and will consider approving it after a public hearing scheduled for May 25.

The University Parkway corridor runs from S. Main Street to Eastchester Drive, where it becomes E. Hartley Drive to N. Main Street.

HPU is requesting that this segment north of Eastchester be renamed N. University Parkway.

HPU owns property, such as part of the former Oak Hollow Mall, that has frontage along E. Hartley Drive, but nothing with an address on that street, according to the city.

Only eight parcels involving five property owners have addresses on E. Hartley Drive.

HPU submitted a signed petition in support of its request from four of the five property owners, which meets the ordinance requirements for a name change, according to the city.

“I personally believe it has merit,” said Tom Kirkman, chairman of the commission. “We’ve got a city street with four different names on it. We’ve got a situation where there are five different property owners and at least four in support of this. We haven’t heard from the other one. Until we do, I’m going to assume they don’t object — and they will have time to object.”

HPU said in a statement that it’s requesting the street-name change because:

“Extending the existing University Parkway designation along this corridor reflects continued university pride throughout our city in an area where the university owns the majority of the property. Because HPU also attracts 100,000+ visitors to High Point each year, it provides more seamless access to campus for guests traveling from out of state.”

If E. Hartley Drive’s name is changed, then city planners recommend that all of W. Hartley Drive be renamed to just Hartley Drive from N. Main Street west to Shadow Valley Road. This would ensure consistency with the city’s street naming and addressing policy, according to the city.
