HIGH POINT — Landlords who want to work with a local subsidized housing program, or just want to learn more about it, will have the opportunity to do so at an upcoming information session.

The High Point Housing Authority will host a virtual Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher information session for current and potential landlords on Tuesday, June 15, at 9 a.m.

The authority administers the Section 8 HCV program, the federal government’s major program for assisting low- to moderate-income households with rental subsidies to secure affordable housing in the private market.

The housing subsidy is paid directly to the landlord by the authority on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. Under certain circumstances, if authorized by the housing authority, a family may use its voucher to purchase a modest home.

Each year, the authority provides Section 8 HCV rental assistance to more than 1,835 households within the community. In 2020, it disbursed more than $9.1 million in rental assistance to more than 500 landlords. In addition, more than $273,300 was disbursed in utility assistance payments. During 2020, the HPHA received 316 additional Housing Choice Vouchers.

Although the local program’s waiting list has been closed since February 2020, the authority continues to issue vouchers from the waiting list and seeks new landlords that are providing affordable housing that meets U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development standards.

The housing authority says benefits for participating landlords include less turnover of tenants and protection against tenants’ possible loss of income. Landlords also have full discretion in choosing tenants, and are guaranteed timely subsidy payments via direct deposit.
