HIGH POINT — The Heroes Center plans to establish a new facility near Oak Hollow Lake, as the High Point nonprofit aims to further its mission of helping veterans transition from military to civilian life.
Board chairman and City Councilman Victor Jones said he expects the organization to close on the purchase of about 7 acres at 2218 Hilton Court by the end of the month.
The Heroes Center plans to develop the site with offices and classroom space to provide workforce development training for veterans.
Part of the plan is also to initiate a certified service dog training program for veterans.
“That’s a really cool thing going on nationally to help veterans,” Jones said. “We could conduct on-the-job training there. A lot of veterans coming out of the service don’t have job skills.”
The new site is conducive to this because it’s relatively private near the shores of the lake, he said.
The Heroes Center will continue to lease the former John Wesley Camp property on Bridges Drive, where it offers transitional housing for veterans.
“We’re still going to fully honor our lease there. We may always use that property,” Jones said.
The new facility won’t have a residential component.
The property will need a rezoning, however, to accommodate the Heroes Center’s plans, he added.
As soon as the purchase closes, organizers plan to begin cleaning up the site, which is mostly undeveloped, and possibly start using it for service-animal training. They’ll also start a capital campaign to raise money for the future project.
In a separate initiative, the organization recently unveiled plans for a 9/11 memorial for the city made of an artifact from the World Trade Center that was donated by D.H. Griffin Cos., which was involved in the Ground Zero cleanup.
Jones said the concept is to create a clock image showing the time the attack occurred with an image of the Twin Towers and an inscription that could say something like, “The day that time stood still.”
The plan is to display the memorial at Congdon Yards.
