City adds parking on English Road

HIGH POINT — The city is adding on-street parking, and eliminating a travel lane, to two sections of W. English Road: the 400 block in front of Congdon Yards and the 1500 block in front of Cohab Space.

Crews on Wednesday were converting one vehicular travel lane on each segment into 11 parking spaces and redesigning traffic patterns to accommodate the changes.

“Definitely, pedestrian safety and walkability is all part of that,” said Greg Venable, the city’s transportation director, “as well as providing some additional on-street parking in those locations for those businesses.”

The city is also installing a crosswalk with pedestrian signals on W. English Road at the intersection with West Point Avenue. This will connect Cohab Space with its primary parking area for the Ziggy’s concert venue on the campus, which serves as a hub for designers and artists in a redeveloped former hosiery mill.

John Muldoon, Cohab Space owner, said it will have a positive effect on the block.

“I’d like to thank city management for recognizing the need and making it happen. Slowing traffic through this neighborhood will be key to making a change. We hope one day in the future to have these storefronts reactivated, and for sure, on-street parking is going to help with this,” he said.

There will be on-street parking only on the south side of W. English Road within this block, not on the other side of the street, which will continue to have two lanes of traffic.

The remaining eastbound traffic lane will continue past Cohab Space to the curve, where the road opens to three lanes and becomes W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

The addition of on-street parking at Congdon Yards leaves two westbound lanes open to traffic on this one-way segment of W. English Road between N. Elm and N. Lindsay streets.

In addition, the Congdon Yards crosswalk is being upgraded to a high-visibility standard.

Rachel Moss Collins, chief operating officer for Business High Point-Chamber of Commerce, which manages Congdon Yards, said the organization is “extremely happy with the addition of the on-street parking” by the city.

She said it will “allow for more options for parking for businesses and the community while visiting Congdon Yards and will support the growth around the catalyst stadium area.”

Jamestown church expanding to Greensboro

JAMESTOWN — Renaissance Church of Jamestown announced Wednesday that it plans to buy land in southern Greensboro for a new main campus.

The church reported in a news release that it has signed a contract to purchase 8 undeveloped acres on Gate City Boulevard between Scotland Road and Marion Elsie Drive, a short distance northeast of Jamestown, where it plans to construct a church building with a 650-seat auditorium, large assembly spaces for students, youth and young adults, and various meeting spaces for children and small groups.

In addition to the church building, the site will include a multistory office complex to house the church offices, as well as a large co-working space available to the public.

Renaissance Church’s current facility at 5114 Harvey Road in Jamestown will be converted to an outreach hub for the church, housing its food pantry and home goods ministry.

The new church building is scheduled to open in early 2024, Renaissance Church lead pastor Jason Goins said in the release.

“We’re so excited about the opportunity to move into a larger, more accessible building that’s purpose-built for our ministry. Our new Gate City location will put us in the middle of a vibrant area which allows us to serve more people,” he said.

Last month the church purchased the former Coldwell Banker office building at 2212 Eastchester Drive in High Point. It plans to convert the existing building into a shared workspace, and it plans to add a 250-seat auditorium to serve as a second church campus. Wednesday’s press release said that campus was expected to open within two years.

Police seek help finding hit-and-run car

HIGH POINT — Police are still trying to find the car that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident last month and want the public’s help.

Frederick C. Council, 62, of High Point, was hit from behind while walking north on University Parkway the night of Oct. 16.

High Point Police Department investigators say the vehicle is a 2016 or 2017 Honda Accord with damage on the front passenger side, the hood and possibly the roof. The car would be missing its front passenger side headlight and turn signal light.

Police aren’t sure of the car’s color.

Police ask that anyone with information call High Point Crime Stoppers at 336-889-4000. Callers who provide tips leading to an arrest could receive a reward up to $5,000.

EDC celebrates milestones

HIGH POINT — High Point and the Triad have the jobs, but getting them filled is a challenge.

That was one takeaway from the High Point Economic Development Corp. annual meeting Wednesday at City Hall.

EDC Director Sandy Dunbeck told the audience that her office and their counterparts throughout the region want to recruit new talent and grow the existing workforce to fill jobs for business expansion projects that were announced this year like Volvo Financial Services, Coldwell Banker Advantage and Ecolab.

“What a year it has been in 2022,” Dunbeck said.

Guest speakers at the meeting expanded on the theme of talent attraction marketing programs to fill the job vacancies.

“The labor shortage is intense and it’s not going away. There are 11.2 million open jobs and only 6 million actively unemployed individuals to fill those jobs. So there is a huge gap,” said Dariel Curren, executive vice president with Development Counsellors International, a New York-based economic development and marketing firm.

“In winning that war for talent, the vibrancy of the city, the quality of the place is just getting more and more important as the labor pool gets more and more competitive.”

The quest for a better quality of life is the top driver of relocation decisions among the labor pool.

She advised designing a customized marketing campaign to draw talent.

“Unique quality of life factors” in High Point include the downtown catalyst area, High Point University and “a wide variety of housing available at a fraction of the cost of the Northeast and other parts of the world,” Curren told the audience.

“There is still work to be done, but the bones are here and you can see vibrancy starting to happen here.”

DCI was hired by the Piedmont Triad Partnership in 2018 and helped design the Carolina Core brand for central North Carolina.

This branding effort is now evolving into a “more in the core” marketing campaign focused on drawing talent to fill the incoming jobs like the Toyota battery plant and Boom Supersonic, she said.
