RANDOLPH COUNTY — The unemployment rate in Randolph County stood at 4.2% in April, down from 4.5% in March, according to information released by the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The rate has fallen 11% from a year ago, when it spiked to 15.2% in April 2020. Unemployment rates statewide decreased in 91 of the state’s 100 counties in April, according to the report. All of the state’s 15 metro areas experienced rate decreases over the year.

The unemployment rate measures the percentage of employable people in the workforce who are over the age of 16 and who have either lost their jobs or have unsuccessfully sought jobs in the last month and are still actively seeking work.

In the surrounding area, Davidson County’s rate also fell to 4.2% in April, down from 4.4% in March. Rates in other surrounding counties were 5.1% in Guilford; 4.4% in Forsyth; 5.7% in Rowan; and 4.0% in Montgomery.

The April rate for Randolph ranks as the 47th lowest in the state, leaving the county — which is part of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area — among mid-level Tier 2 counties. The number of unemployed in Randolph County stands at 2,721 people. Randolph’s labor force now stands at 64,113.

In the days that immediately preceded April, Gov. Roy Cooper announced the most impactful relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions since the state’s phased reopening in response to the COVID-19 pandemic began. The emergency order allowed for up to 100% capacity for retailers, salons and museums as long as mask and social distancing mandates were maintained.

Word of relaxed restrictions came as a relief to many businesses that have been hampered by limitations to the number of people who could enter their buildings.

North Carolina’s statewide, non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4% in April, which is down from 4.6% in March. It was a decrease of 8.8% over the year. The national unemployment rate in April remained at 6.1%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
