ARCHDALE — A large project at Creekside Park will soon commence as a local company has been approved to complete grading and paving for additional parking at Archdale’s premier recreational facility.
The expanded parking area will serve Barkdale Dog Park and the ball fields and courts on the growing upper portion of the park. Next year, the city has budgeted for grading in the same vicinity to level off the T-ball fields and adjacent areas for more efficient use.
Given how closely connected the two projects are, staff sought bids for each. Bidding was opened last month. Four contractors offered bids, according to staff, and the lowest responsible, responsive bidder for both projects was Archdale-based Ace/Avant Concrete Construction Company.
Costs associated with the project are estimated at $318,256.55.
Council voted unanimously to approve moving forward with the projects and awarding the bid to Ace/Avant. Councilman Lewis Dorsett offered his support of the project and stated his satisfaction to see a company that does its work nearby benefit from it.
“It’s good to see someone local doing this project,” Dorsett said.
Council provided authorization for the city manager to enter a contract for the grading and paving services. Funds for the first project were included in the city’s 2020-21 fiscal year budget.
The city of Archdale maintains a large dog park at 5900 Mose Dr. with sunny and shaded areas. There are two separate sides, one for small dogs and one for large dogs.
Council approved the contract for installation of bathroom and shelter facilities at Creekside Park in June. That development came months after the city received a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant that enabled several construction projects, one of which was the bathroom facility that serves the Mose Drive portion of Creekside Park, where the T-ball fields are located. Also in that area, the city has constructed sand volleyball courts, an outdoor basketball court and the Barkdale Dog Park.
A second Barkdale Park at Sterling Ridge is coming soon.
