THOMASVILLE — Fred Young, 94, passed away Monday evening at Piedmont Crossing, Thomasville, North Carolina, where he had been a resident for his last three years. He was born in Cornelia, Georgia, in 1919. He served our country in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the Victory Medal.
He was a resident of Thomasville since the early 40s where he met the love of his life, Pauline Carter, who survives him. A General Motors Master Salesman, he started his career at Perkins Pontiac in Thomasville and subsequently at Dave Neill Pontiac and Vann York Pontiac, both in High Point. In the late 50s, he developed the subdivision, Pontiac Heights, which is adjacent to Liberty Drive Elementary School in Thomasville. Throughout his life, Fred was a devoted member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, a few blocks from his previous home on Aycock Street of over 60 years. His church service included the Building Committee Chairmanship and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. After retirement, he became a respectable golfer—a member of the “hole-in-one” club— and enjoyed travel to visit former Army friends and family, always in a Pontiac. He was also an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labors.
In addition to his wife of 72 years, he is survived by his four daughters - Jane Brennan of Belmont, NC (Neil); Jean Hill of Knoxville, TN (Steve); Julia Shadrick of Wingate, NC (Wayne); and Joyce Teague of Asheboro, NC (Randy); twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday morning, December 06, 2013 at 10 o’clock in the fellowship hall of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow in the sanctuary at 11. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Holly Hill Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, 422 Liberty Drive, Thomasville, NC, 27360.
